Historic Timeline of Belhaven University

1883: The Board of Trustees adopted the founding date of Belhaven University.

1894: Belhaven University was chartered in Jackson, Mississippi as a privately owned institution.

1910: Dr. J. R. Preston operated Belhaven College until a fire destroyed it, then he donated the title of the college to the Presbyterian Church.

1911: Belhaven College was reopened by the Central Mississippi Presbytery as Belhaven Collegiate and Industrial Institute, at a new site on Peachtree Street. Dr. R. V. Lancaster of McComb Female Institute became the third president when the two institutions merged.

1915: The name was changed to Belhaven University.

1960–1961: An ambitious expansion program resulted in six major new buildings, while enrollment and the university budget tripled.

1972: The Synod of Mississippi transferred ownership of the university to the Board of Trustees.

1995: Over 80 percent of Belhaven University's faculty held doctoral or equivalent degrees and the university expanded course offerings for adult and evening students.

1996: Belhaven University reached an all-time record enrollment of 1,320 students, and the best-qualified faculty in the history of the University. Over its 113 years Belhaven University has established a reputation for faithful service to city, state, country, and God.
